June 28, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release

In a game extremely fitting of the Anderson-Aiken rivalry, Thursday's contest went back and forth between the two teams, with Anderson eventually pulling out the 7-6 win with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Anderson (9-27) took a 5-1 lead into the sixth inning, helped by Tanner Rogers' first home run as a Joe in the second inning and starting pitcher Ronald Ball having retired 14 straight hitters between the first and fifth innings. It was in the sixth inning, though, when the action heated up.

The Foxhounds (19-17) scored two runs on back-to-back RBI singles by Bradley Key and Chad Miller to cut the Joes' lead to two. Then in the top of the seventh, with Tim Sweeney at second and Josh Eachues at first, Garth McKinney hit his sixth home run of the year, a three-run shot to left center that gave Aiken a 6-5 lead.

Anderson responded to tie the game in its next trip to the plate, when Billy Hogan's RBI single drove in Brandon Carter from second to tie the game.

Then, in the bottom of the eighth inning, Hector Borg came to the plate for the Joes. Already having earned his first multi-hit game of the year, Borg stepped to the plate with runners at first and third with two outs and hit an RBI single to drive in Jared Williams for the game-winning run. Will Krout retired the Foxhounds in order in the ninth inning to earn his second save of the year.

Dave Whitfield improved to 1-0 with his first win of the year and Gary Lee dropped to 1-1.

Anderson received 3-for-5 nights from Borg and Carter, as well as two-hit nights from Hogan and Richard Quihuis-Bell.

McKinney and Miller combined for three runs and five RBI for Aiken.

With the win, the Joes cut the Foxhounds' lead in the Palmetto Series to 7-3. The loss assures that Aiken can no longer win the rivalry cup with a series sweep this weekend.

The teams meet up in game two of the series Friday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05.
