Alexandria Blue Anchors News Release
Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors showed poise and character in a comeback effort against the Rox Wednesday night at Knute Nelson Memorial Park to defeat the St. Cloud Rox 6-5. The Anchors record now stands at 7-22.
The Rox jumped on starter Andrew Thome in the first as they scored two runs after the first two batters of the inning were retired. Chris Paul drew a walk and stole second and third. A double by Clay Ardeeser plated Paul and Ardeeser would score on a base hit from Kade Scivicque putting St. Cloud up 2-0.
In the third the Rox added to their lead versus Robbie Mouton as Boo Vazquez led off the frame with a solo homer to right field making the score 3-0.
Another solo homer, off the bat of Chris Paul, in the top of the fifth inning against Sean Terres put the Anchors in a 4-0 hole.
The rally started in the bottom of the sixth and it was led by Craig Nennig who hit a solo homer to center making the score 4-1.
In the seventh, the Anchors had the bases loaded and just one out with Cam Duzenack up to bat. He grounded a ball to shortstop for what seemed to be an inning-ending double play but the throw to first base got a way and it allowed both Roman Collins and Ryan Busch to score and cut the deficit to one run.
Craig Nennig got the offense rolling again in the eighth by leading the inning off with a double and moving to third on a wild pitch. A base hit from Jordan Lee tied the game at four and he would go to second on a wild pitch. Kris Goodman bunted Lee to second and after Rickey Sanchez struck out for out number two, Roman Collins doubled to left-center and give the Anchors a 5-4 advantage. An insurance run was added when Ryan Busch doubled in Collins increasing the lead to 6-4.
Things got close in the top of the ninth. Kevin Walsh came in with a two-run lead and a runner on first. A base hit by Bradley Strong put runners on the corners and. An error by Rickey Sanchez allowed one run to score and put the tying run on for Paul. Paul would ground out to second for out number two and on a 2-2 pitch, Walsh punched out Ardeeser to end the game and give Alexandria the 6-5 victory.
Thome lasted just one inning and gave up two runs on two hits, three walks and a strikeout. Mouton gave the Anchors three strong innings giving up just a run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
