Anchors fall to Cats in final frame

Alexandria, Minn. - The Alexandria Blue Anchors fell to the Thunder Bay Border 6-5 Thursday night at Knute Nelson Memorial Park. The Anchors are now 13-15 in the second half and 25-38 on the season.

The Border Cats got on the board against Max Knutson in the first. With the bases loaded and just one out, Knutson walked Nate Nolan to force in Jared James for the first run. A groundout by Mikael Mogues drove in Matt Batten for another run and Thunder Bay led 2-0 after half an inning.

Drew Fearing walked to start the bottom of the first against Johnny York and Dane Hutcheon and Ricky Sanchez followed with hits to load the bases with no outs. After a foul popup, Matt Duce drove in a run on a fielder's choice and it was 2-1.

Thunder Bay got back on the board in the fourth against Alex McCune, who was making his Anchors debut. Max Dutto walked to start the inning and he was sacrificed into scoring position. A groundout moved him to third and after a walk, Batten collected an RBI infield single making the score 3-1.

After two quick outs to start the bottom of the fourth, Kyle Richardson hit a home run to left-centerfield to tie the game at three.

Against Mitch Larson in the fifth, Thunder Bay got back on the board. Nate Nolan walked with on out and a double from Mikael Mogues and a walk to Dutto loaded the bases. Grant McKown dropped down a squeeze bunt brining in Nolan giving them the 4-3 advantage.

An insurance run came in for the Border Cats in the eighth. Jacob James singled with one out and went to second on Jared James walk. A passed ball moved both into scoring position and an RBI single from Batten made it 5-3.

The Blue Anchors got back on the board in the eighth. Trooper Reynolds and Matt Duce singled with one out and after a fly out, Matt Hopfner walked to load the bases. Richardson hit an infield single score Reynolds and Ben Allen walked in Duce to tie the game at five.

In the ninth against Eric White, the Border Cats grabbed the lead. With two in scoring position, Jacob James hit a sac fly to score Dutto and give a final score of 6-5.

Knutson's day was finished after one inning allowing two runs on one hit and two walks and a strikeout. McCune pitched three innings giving up a lone run on three hits and two walks while collecting one punch out. Larson gave up two runs in 3.1 innings of work giving up three runs and a walk with one batter struck out. Kody Knaus pitched 2/3 of an inning surrendering a hit and two walks. White (2-2) got the loss in the ninth giving up a run on a walk and hit by pitch and one strikeout.

Minnesota Baseball Academy Player of the Game - Kyle Richardson (LF) - The outfielder from Notre Dame finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a run. He hit hits third homer of the year.
