Anchorage Rallies to Win Shootout

Alaska Aces News Release

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Kimbi Daniels converted a breakaway shorthanded for the tying goal midway through the third period and the Anchorage Aces scored all three goals in the shootout to win 4-3 Saturday in front of 5,720 at Bakersfield's Centennial Garden.

The Condors took charge early, scoring twice in the game's first three minutes, as Christoffer Norgren connected just 32 seconds into the game and Jason Ralph rammed home his own rebound at 2:52. Dean Larson, the league's leading scorer, sliced the deficit in half with his 14th of the season at 9:37 of the opening period. Bakersfield pushed the lead back to two goals courtesy of Paul Rosebush at 3:51 of the middle frame, but Yvan Corbin kept Anchorage within striking distance by notching only his third goal over the last 15 games (and 12th of the year) five minutes later, leaving the score 3-2 Condors heading into the final 20 minutes.

Both teams struggled through a conservative third period, until Daniels picked up a loose puck near his own blue line after a face-off in the Anchorage zone with Bakersfield on the power play. When Daniels looked up, he saw no one but Condor goaltender Kevin St. Pierre ahead, whom he promptly beat five-hole on the ensuing breakaway to force a shootout. In the extra session, Aces' netminder Christian Soucy, who turned away 38 of 41 shots in regulation, stopped all three Bakersfield attempts. Meanwhile, Corbin and Larson scored in the first two rounds and Jiri Jakes sealed Anchorage's fifth straight win against Bakersfield (all by one goal, three in shootouts) by beating St. Pierre in the fourth round.

The Aces have won four of five to improve to 8-17-1 overall, heading into Tuesday's at Fresno, which is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. AST start. The Falcons have slipped to 8-10-2 following Saturday's loss in San Diego, so Anchorage can climb out of the WCHL cellar for the first time all year with a win over Fresno next week.

All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
