ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim Ducks, National Hockey League (NHL) parent club of the Norfolk Admirals, announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed goaltender Frederik Andersen to a two-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
Andersen, 22 (10/2/89), appeared in 39 games for Frolunda of the Swedish Elite League last season, posting a 1.67 goals-against average (GAA) with eight shutouts and a .941 save percentage (SV%). Selected by Anaheim in the third round (87th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, Andersen's eight shutouts in 2011-12 established a franchise record, surpassing Henrik Lundqvist's previous mark of seven set in 2003-04. Andersen, who was a finalist for the league's 2011-12 Rookie of the Year award, also led the club in GAA and SV%. He appeared in six playoff games for Frolunda, recording a 2.69 GAA and .911 SV%.
A native of Herning, Denmark, Andersen has represented Team Denmark at the last four IIHF World Championships in Finland/Sweden (2012), Slovakia (2011), Germany (2010) and Switzerland (2009). He was also a member of the Danish team at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championship in the Czech Republic. Prior to joining Frolunda in 2011-12, Andersen played three seasons in Denmark's top league (AL Bank Ligaen), posting a 2.37 GAA and 10 shutouts in 88 games. In 2010-11, he ranked fourth among league goaltenders in GAA (2.49) and SV% (.920) in 36 games for Frederikshavn. Andersen was originally selected by Carolina in the seventh round (187th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
