Allen, Texas - In game six of the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs, the defending champion, Allen Americans, were put to their truest test. On the brink of elimination, the Americans were able to answer the call, winning 4-2 at home over the Idaho Steelheads. The victory ties the series at 3-3, and sends both squads to a deciding game seven tomorrow night, Wednesday the 27th.
The Americans fell behind on a late first period goal from Tommy Fallon, which was shortly nullified on a tying goal from Tristan King before the period ended.
Taking the 1-1 tie into the second period, it took only 33 seconds for the Americans to go ahead on an Eric Roy goal. From there, they would never look back.
Matt Register and Greger Hanson would chip into the Allen lead, making it 4-1 in the Americans favor. Idaho would have a good attempt at making things interesting with a Rob Linsmayer.
Allen would benefit offensively from their defense, most notably Eric Roy and Matt Register. Both players notched a goal and an assist in the win, securing spots in the three stars of the night. The Power Play was also clicking, something that has been a consistent bright spot in the playoffs for Allen. The goals from Roy and Hanson were both on the man advantage.
"This was a solid game by our group," said Allen Americans Head Coach and GM Steve Martinson. "We didn't beat ourselves tonight. We had good traffic in front of their net."
Riley Gill got the start in goal after a forgettable game five. He made amends at home in game six, turning away 30 of 32 Idaho shots on goal.
With the game six win, Allen will look to take their momentum into the all-important game seven against Idaho. The game will take place at the Allen Event Center Wednesday night, the 27th, at 7:05 pm.
