Americans Double up T-Birds

Kennewick,January 4, 2010 - The Tri-City Americans defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 8-4 Tuesday night at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

The T-Birds take on the Kelowna Rockets on Friday at 7:35 p.m. at ShoWare Center.

Tri-City took a 1-0 lead at 5:42 of the first period on a power-play goal by Neal Prokop. Justin Feser and Patrick Holland had the assists on the goal.

Travis Toomey tied the game 1-1 at 14:37 of the first when banged a rebound past Tri-City goalie Drew Owsley. Burke Gallimore took the initial shot and Toomey backhanded the rebound past the goalie. Brendan Rouse had the second assist on Toomey's seventh goal of the season.

Tri-City (23-11-1-1) outshot Seattle 16-6 in the first period.

Prokop scored at 5:17 of the second period on a shot with traffic in front of Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard to give the Americans a 2-1 lead. Feser had the only assist on the goal.

Seattle (16-15-3-4) tied the game 2-2 at 8:29 of the second. Charles Wells got to a misplayed puck along the right boards in the neutral zone and took off down ice on a two-on-one break with Lund. In the right circle the Tri-City defenseman went towards Wells who quickly cross the puck to Lund. Lund, a left-hand shot, had his stick on the ice and redirected Wells' pass over Owsley's right shoulder. Lund has a goal in each of the last two games.

Tri-City went in front 3-2 at 12:29 of the second on a goal from Tyler Schmidt. Zachary Yuen and Holland had the assists.

The Americans took a 4-2 lead at 15:17 of the second on a power-play goal by Adam Hughesman. Schmidt and Brendan Shinnimin assisted on the goal.

Feser scored with 39 seconds left in the second to extend the Americans lead to 5-2. Holland and Schmidt were credited with the assists.

Tri-City outshot Seattle 16-11 in the second period.

Wells cut the T-Birds lead to two goals at 5:49 of the third period by scoring a shorthanded goal. Luke Lockhart stole the puck and sent Wells away on a breakaway. Wells came down and Owsley, faked left, brought the puck back right and slid it under the goalie. It was Wells third shorthanded goal of the season.

The Wells goal gave the T-Birds momentum and Toomey was able to capitalize at 8:13 of the third. Toomey beat Owsley over the blocker for his second goal of the game. Gallimore set up Toomey by feeding him a crisp pass in front of the Tri-City goal. Erik Bonsor had the second assist on the goal.

The Americans got the two-goal lead back at 13:41 of the third on a goal from Yuen. Feser and Schmidt had the assists.

Mason Wilgosh scored at 15:03 of the third to give the Americans the three-goal lead back. Hughesman and Shinnimin had the assists.

Shinnimin scored with 29 seconds left in the third to get the Americans final goal. Paul Sohor had the only assist on the goal.

Pickard stopped 37 of 45 shots and his record is now 16-13-2-4.

Owsley made 24 saves on 28 shots and his record is now 20-10-0-1.
