Americans' Bean Named WHL On the Run Player of the Week

April 16, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Tri-City Americans defenceman Jake Bean has been named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending April 15, 2018.

Bean, who was selected in the first round, 13th overall, by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2016 NHL Draft, recorded eight assists and a plus-eight rating in two games as the Americans swept their Round Two series against the Victoria Royals, helping the team return to the Western Conference Championship for the first time since the 2012 WHL Playoffs.

In a 6-5 win against the Royals Tuesday, Bean had a career-best performance, tallying five assists. Four of them were primary assists, with one coming on the game-winning goal. For his efforts, Bean was named as the Second star of the night in the WHL.

Wednesday, Bean powered his team to victory with three assists in a 5-3 win against the Royals to sweep the series. Bean recorded three even-strength assists, earning first star of the game honours from the Americans.

Bean has had a strong performance in the 2018 WHL Playoffs, with 14 points (1G-13A) in eight games. His 14 points have him tied with Moose Jaw Warriors defenceman Kale Clague (Los Angeles Kings) for the scoring lead among defencemen in the 2018 WHL Playoffs.

His performance in the post-season are part of what has been a big season for Bean, who originally began the 2017-18 WHL regular season with the Calgary Hitmen. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound product of Calgary, Alta. had 48 points (12G-36A) in 67 games split between the Hitmen and Americans. He also played a strong role on the blue line for Hockey Canada at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship, helping them capture gold.

Overall, Bean has appeared in 219 career WHL regular season games, registering 196 points (49G-147A), including 24 power-play goals, one short-handed goal, and eight game-winning goals.

Bean and the Americans will take on the Everett Silvertips in the Western Conference Championship, with Game One schedule for Friday, April 20 (7:35 p.m. PT) at Angel Of The Winds Arena in Everett, Wash.
