Americans Acquire Rights to Chicago Blackhawks Prospect Jalen Luypen from Edmonton

KENNEWICK, WA - Tri-City Americans General Manager Bob Tory announced today that the team has acquired the playing rights to 20-year-old center Jalen Luypen, along with a conditional second-round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft, from the Edmonton Oil Kings.

In exchange, the Oil Kings acquire 18-year-old forward Rhett Melnyk, 19-year-old defenseman Bryson Andregg, and a conditional second-round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.

Luypen recently signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The five-foot-ten and 157-pound forward has played four seasons in the WHL, all with the Edmonton Oil Kings. He has collected a career 124 points (61 goals, 63 assists) through 200 WHL games played.

Luypen recorded a career-high 64 points last season (29 goals, 34 assists) through 66 games played. He went on to add four goals and nine assists in 19 postseason appearances, helping the Oil Kings win the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champions. He played three games at the 2022 Memorial Cup, tallying one goal and two assists.

Luypen, a Kelowna, B.C. native, was selected in the seventh round of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.
