Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors scored four runs in the first off Spirit ace John Kelly and hung on to beat the North Shore Spirit 5-4 Thursday afternoon in Lynn, Massachusetts.
Kelly got Jorge Diaz to pop out on the first pitch, but then walked Ender Gonzalez and hit Vic Davilla in the head to put runners at first and second. Marlon Roche then singled to drive in Gonzalez, and Brian Macchi doubled, scoring Davilla and Roche. After getting Schmidt to ground out, Kelly then walked Cedrick Harris, and Luis Melendez got his first hit with the Ambassadors, driving in Macchi to make it 4-0.
Nolan Fry gave up a run in the bottom of the first and second innings, a solo home run from John Schmitz, his second, in the first, and an RBI double from Billy Malone to drive in Jason Startari.
The Ambassadors added an unearned run in the fifth, but North Shore would immediately get the run back on a Carlos Sepulveda solo home run, his second in two days, and his fifth of the season.
That ended the afternoon for Fry, and Jose Guerrero came in to pitch. He pitched a scoreless sixth, but walked Schmitz to begin the seventh. He would score on a Fran Riordan groundout.
Then Carlos Gomez came in to pitch in the eighth. He hit Bryan Caruso to begin the inning. Gomez would eventually load the bases with two out, and get Sepulveda to softly line out to end the inning. The Spirit stranded eleven runners on base in the game.
John Boker pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save, his second of the season. Fry gets the win, he is now 4-4, while Kelly gets just his second loss of the season. He is now 9-2. The win is the third in a row for the Ambassadors, who are now 8-11 in the second half. North Shore falls to 9-9. Melendez finished the game 3-4 with an RBI. The two teams play the third game of this four game series tomorrow night, with John Dillinger taking the mound for the Ambassadors.
