July 31st, 2003 (Nashua, NH) - The Bridgeport Bluefish dominated the Nashua Pride from start to finish tonight, earning a 4-0 win in front of 1,923 fans at Historic Holman Stadium.
Bridgeport took the lead on a lead-off solo HR to left by Willis Otanez in the top of the second. By the end of the fourth, the 'Fish enjoyed a 3-0 lead over the Pride. After Jose Amado led off with a blooper into right that was misplayed by Pat Howell, Tony Mota hit a one-out double to right that put two men in scoring position. Amado scored the second Bridgeport run of the night on a groundout by Mel Wearing, and Mota came home on a single to center by Hector Kuilan. An Angel Espada singl to center put runners at the corners with two out, but Pride starter Carlos Chantres struck out Rodney Lindsay to end the frame.
Nashua's frustration over their second half struggles was evident in the bottom of the seventh. After Glenn Murray was called out on strikes for the third time in the contest, Murray dropped his bat and helmet near the batters box as he walked back to the dugout and was ejected from the contest.
While this particular series had its share of questionable calls, the Pride's inability to earn more than two hits against Bluefish starter Masaru Imazeki was what doomed Nashua. After Bridgeport tacked on another run in the ninth to make the score 4-0, reliever Mike Guilfoyle came in to make sure Nashua could not return the favor of a ninth inning rally, slamming the door on the Pride. Imazeki (6-6) got the win, while Chantres (6-3) took the loss, giving up just one earned run.
The Pride now welcome the Pennsylvania Road Warriors to Historic Holman Stadium for a three-game series from August 1st through August 3rd. For ticket information, call 883-BALL, logon to NashuaPride.com or stop by the Historic Holman Stadium box office.
