Allentown Ambassadors News Release

The Allentown Ambassadors lost a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning and had three men thrown at the plate in the game and lost to Elmira 5-4 in twelve innings.

The first inning was a wild affair, with Elmira scoring two in the top of the inning off Ambassador starter Carlos Gonzalez and the Ambassadors getting four in the bottom off Elmira starter Hatuey Mendoza. The Pioneers scored after Rolando Bello led off the game with a double, then Carlos Rosario reached on a fielder's choice. He hit a comebacker to Gonzalez, who tried to get Bello out at second base, but everyone was safe. Rafael Alvarez then popped out, but Scott Hunter doubled to drive in two.

The Ambassadors struck back, after Mendoza walked Jorge Diaz, Ender Gonzalez, and Brian Macchi to begin the inning, Vic Davilla singled to left, driving home Diaz. Ryan Bordenick then doubled to score Gonzalez and Macchi. Dan Singletary then hit a grounder to first base, and Brian Jones threw home in time to get Davilla. Greg Schmidt then hit a sacrifice fly to score Bordenick and give the Ambassadors a 4-2 lead. The Pioneers would add another run in the third, when Scott Hunter scored on a Ryan Lehr single.

The score would stay 4-3 until the eighth inning. Chris Zallie, who relieved Gonzalez after five innings, hit Brian Jones to start the inning, then got Ryan Lehr to line out to right field. Carlos Gomez then came into the game and Alez Marconi reached on an error by Ender Gonzalez. The Ambassadors had four errors in the game. Ryan Webb then singled home pinch runner Rickie Morton to tie the game. The Ambassadors got out of the inning in part due to a pitch out on a suicide squeeze, which saw Marconi caught in a run-down and eventually tagged out.

The Ambassadors had a chance to win the game in the tenth, when Brian Macchi reaced on an error. Davilla then walked and Bordenick singled to right. Rightfielder Hunter threw Macchi out at the plate trying to score on the play, and Singletary lined out to end the inning.

Elmira scored in the 12th after Scott Hunter doubled and Rickie Morton doubled him home off John Boker. Chris McGee, who came in on the eleventh, pitched a perfect 12th to pick up his second win of the season. Boker took his first loss. Hunter finished the night 3-6 with three doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Ryan Bordenick was 3-5 for the Ambassadors with two RBI and a run scored in defeat.

The loss ended the Ambassadors' three game winning streak and dropped them back into third place, a half game behind Elmira. Next up is a critical four game series against the first place New Jersey Jackals at Bicentennial Park. The first game is tomorrow night at 7:05 and it's guarantee win night, so if the Ambassadors lose, any fans still in attendance at the end of the game get a free general admission ticket to the game on Tuesday.
