Allentown Ambassadors News Release
The Allentown Ambassadors had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with one out, but failed to score and lost to the Bangor Lumberjacks 3-2 Sunday afternoon in Allentown.
Bangor started the game getting one run in the top of the first and top of the second innings off Ambassador starter John Dillinger. Schuyler Doakes tripled on the first pitch and then Sandy Martinez singled on the first pitch he saw to drive in Doakes in the first.
The Ambassadors tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ryan Bordenick led-off with a walk off Bangor starter Danny Miller. After Brian Macchi grounded out, Greg Stevens reached on a throwing error on shortstop Martinez. With runners at the corners, Tito Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Bordenick. Stevens moved up to second when Miller, backing up home plate, threw wildly to first trying to pick Stevens off after the throw home had gotten away. Stevens scored on a Cedrick Harris single.
But Bangor would get the lead right back. Donnie Ross doubled to begin the sixth and scored on a Juan Lebron single.
The Ambassadors would load the bases in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, but Stevens flied out to end the inning.
Jeff Sparks came in to try to close the game out in the ninth. After getting Bordenick to pop out, Macchi reached on an error on firstbaseman Donnie Ross, who lost a throw from Martinez in the sun. Then Stevens walked, and Cruz reached on a dropped fly ball by Doakes in left. With the bases loaded, Dan Singletary pinch hit for Harris, who was 2-3 with an RBI, and struck out swinging. Jorge Diaz then popped out to right to end the game.
Miller pitched seven and two thirds, allowing two runs, both unearned, on seven hits. He walked two and struck, out three. His record is now 2-7. Dillinger pitched a complete game. In nine innings he allowed three earned runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out eight. His record is now 5-2. Sparks earned his third save of the season.
The loss was the thirteenth one run loss for the Ambassadors this season, who have a 5-13 record in one run games. It was their seventh one run game that they have lost in a row. The last five losses for the Ambassadors have all been by one run. They now head out on the road for seven games, four in Elmira and three in Berkshire, starting tomorrow night in Elmira.
