Ambassadors Drop Exhibition Finale to Jackals
May 19, 2003 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Allentown Ambassadors News Release
Ex-Ambassador Keith Maxwell went 2-4 with three RBI to help lead the New Jersey Jackals to a 6-5 win over the Allentown Ambassadors Monday afternoon at Bicentennial Park in Allentown in the last exhibition game of the season.
The Ambassadors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Jackals' starter Gary Loudon, but squandered two bases loaded situations in both the bottom of the first and the bottom of the second.
The Jackals struck back in the top of the fourth with three runs. Travis Bailey led-off the inning with a double, then moved to third when shortstop Chris Rowan reached on an error by pitcher Blake Boyer. Boyer had Rowan picked-off first base, but twisted his knee before he could tag him, allowing Bailey to score from third. Boyer had to be carried off the field. The team is waiting for the results of an MRI on his knee. Keith Maxwell followed with a double off new Ambassador pitcher Charles Lawton, and scored on a sacrifice fly by secondbaseman Craig Conway.
The Jackals stretched their lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Ambassadors rallied in the bottom of the inning, cutting the deficit in half with a Vic Davilla two-run home run down the right field line. New Jersey added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, which came in handy after Davilla singled home a run in the bottom of the ninth to once again bring the Ambassadors within a run. The RBI was Davilla's fourth in the game. But he was left standing on second base when designated hitter Brad Manderbach struck out.
Joe Magri got the victory, while Charles Lawton took the loss. Julio Perez allowed one run in the ninth, but still picked up the save.
Boyer was not the only Ambassador pitcher to get injured. Eric Mills pitched two-thirds of an inning before hearing something pop in his elbow. He is currently being evaluated by the Ambassador medical staff.
The loss wraps up the exhibition season for the Ambassadors. The team finished with a 1-3 record. The Ambassadors' home opener is May 22nd at 7:05 at Bicentennial Park against the Bangor Lumberjacks. For ticket information, call (610) 437-6800.
