THE STAKES: Both teams are in desperate need of a win in order to maintain life in the heated National Conference playoff race. The two division winners and next four best records will receive invitations to the playoffs this season. Currently, the Dusters and Dorados are on the outside looking in, as Central Valley (5-4) currently holds the 6th and final playoff spot.
COACH PERDUE'S THOUGHTS ON RGV:
"This is a playoff game for both teams. We have lost 2 in a row, and they've lost 3 in a row. With the way Spokane and OKC are playing right now, I don't know that 9-7 will get you in the playoffs in our conference. We both have 5 losses, so it's not hard to do the math and understand what this game means. We're going with a simplified approach on offense this week. Defensively, we just need to keep doing what we've been doing. We've gone 5 straight weeks allowing less than 40 points. That's winning defense. We're banged up right now, and we've got several new faces in key spots, and we've moved some guys around. We have to unify, and be strong. They have a tough crowd, and it was a dog fight when we played them a few weeks ago."
SACK RACE CONTINUES:
Dusters FB/LB Jared Williams leads the team with 5.5 sacks. C/NG Kert Turner is a close second with 5.0 sacks, and FB/LB Titus Ivory is heating up as well with 4 sacks.
KEY MATCHUP: QB PLAY
Neither the Dusters nor the Dorados were very productive offensively in their week 10 contests. RGV produced only 13 offensive points, while the Dusters managed just 18 offensive points. Canadian quarterback J.R. Davies will get the start again for the Dorados, and seeks to post his first win of the season as a starter. Jarrod Rouanzoin will be under center again this week for Amarillo, and looks to improve from last weekend's loss at Bakersfield.
IMPROVED DEFENSE CONTINUES TO STAND STRONG
The Dusters' defensive unit continues to dominate, allowing only 163 points in their past five games (32.6 ppg). Through 9 games this season, the Dusters' defense has racked up 23 quarterback sacks and intercepted 10 passes. As a playoff team in 2005, the Dusters' defense had 21 sacks and 10 interceptions in 16 regular-season games.
