Amarillo Bulls News Release

AMARILLO, TX - Thirty-three players hit the ice this morning (Monday) at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center as the Amarillo Bulls training camp officially got underway.

Head Coach Jon Rogger along with Assistant Coaches Mike Watt and Austin Sutter were on the ice putting the players through various drills including plenty of skating. Rogger said at the beginning of camp it's all about conditioning.

"Many of these kids haven't skated this hard in a while," said Rogger. "They have gone on and played shinny hockey during the summer but nothing like this. The first week, is all about getting them back into game shape and then in the second week we will get into systems."

Many players have off-season conditioning programs and routines they try to follow as they prepare for the new season ahead. Bulls players are no different with their goal to be ready for battle in the rough and tough South Division.

"The one thing you wonder about is their off season conditioning and what kind of shape they will be in," Rogger said. "As I mentioned to some people the other day, these guys are here play hockey so they need to do whatever it takes to be prepared for the upcoming season."

The Bulls will hit the ice for two practices a day throughout this week. In between those two practices are off-ice conditioning segments.

Of the 33 players on the ice are six returning players, including forward Mitchell McPherson who got a former Texas Tornado teammate and goaltender Joakim Justras to come to play for Amarillo this year.

"It's great to be back here in the Texas Panhandle," said McPherson. "Amarillo is my favorite place to play and I brought in my former teammate Joakim Jutras. He already knew some about Amarillo and how good of a place this was. We played here against Amarillo that was never fun, but playing for the Bulls has been a great experience so far."

In a couple of weeks, the Bulls will finally get an opportunity to play against different opposition when they face the Odessa Jackalopes at the Music City Mall on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 7 pm.

Once that exhibition game has concluded the Bulls will prepare for the next phase and that's the start of the regular season at the North American Hockey League Showcase that begins on September 17.
