Amarillo Bulls Edge Shreveport in Shootout to Lengthen Division Lead

November 4, 2018 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Amarillo Bulls News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Amarillo Bulls were looking for max points out of their weekend series with the Shreveport Mudbugs and that is exactly what they got. Logan Jenuwine scored in a shootout and goaltender Justin Evenson did the rest to post his first NAHL win as the Bulls edged the Shreveport Mudbugs 3-2 at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Military Appreciation Night.

The victory by Amarillo and the loss by Topeka on home ice increased the first place advantage to four points. It was the first time the Bulls had collected all four points against the Mudbugs in two plus seasons against their new South Division opponent.

It was a great start to the game for Rocky Russo's bunch as they capitalized and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Brendan West scored on a rebound in front of the net from Aaron Swanson and Jason Brancheau. Later it was Gabriel Seger who cashed in from West. The Mudbugs rallied late in the final three minutes of the period, and were rewarded for their work as Anton Rubtsov scored on a rebound left by goaltender Evenson. The Bulls outshot Shreveport 15-13.

The visitors tied the game to start the second period with a shorthanded goal off the stick of Joel Frazee. After that, the intensity and emotion of the game picked up as it got quite chippy, rough a tumble with several skirmishes after the whistle, including one to close the period.

There was no scoring in the third period despite the Bulls having a five minute power play to begin play. The Bulls were unable to solve Leo Chuard.

Each team had a power play in overtime but failed the score. The Bulls penalty killing which was become a strength of the team over the past few games was on point with some great work.

In the shootout, Logan Jenuwine scored on a great shot and at the other end Evenson stopped all three players he faced. Evenson, who the Bulls selected in the NAHL Draft during the summer, was making his first start of the season. The young goaltender got stronger as the game went along and saved his best work for the third period and beyond.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Shreveport Mudbugs 49-32. There were no power play goals on a combined 11 total opportunities.
