Amarillo Bulls Beat Austin 5-2 to Begin NAHL Showcase

BLAINE, MN - The Amarillo Bulls fired three goals in the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and went on to beat the Austin Bruins 5-2 to open up the North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota on Wednesday afternoon.

It was a tight game for the first 40 minutes with the teams tied 2-2 before the Bulls went to work with three, including two in 22 seconds on the power play.

"It wasn't the type of game plan that we drew up, but you could clearly see that the guys were nervous," said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. "The team worked hard and as the game went along, we started to elevate our game.

"I told the guys that we played better in the 2nd and even more so in the third. I was happy, and anytime we can get a win, we will take it, but we now have to move on and get re-focused for a big game tomorrow against Wenatchee."

There was no scoring in the first period, but the Bulls dominated the play outshooting the Bruins 16-5.

Austin opened the scoring with a power play goal in the first minute of the second period. Almost 15 minutes later, the Bulls pulled even when Michael Davis deflected home a shot. After the Bruins retook the lead off a deflection of their own off a face-off, the Bulls once again tied the game when Connor Frey fired a shot from the point.

It didn't take long for the Bulls to take command of the game in the third period. Michael Davis scored on a partial breakaway at 1:28. The power play went to work after that with two quick goals. First, Clint Carlisle with a screen shot from the point and then Ryan Cole converted an opportunity at the side of the net.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Austin Bruins 43-15, including 13-1 in the third period. The Bulls were 2 for 3 on the power play, while the Bruins were 1 for 4.

The second game for the Amarillo Bulls at the NAHL Showcase is set for Thursday night at 7:45 pm against the Wenatchee Wild.
