AMARILLO, TX - The NCAA hockey season faced off officially this past weekend, and it was a busy and productive one for Amarillo Bulls' Alumni.
Army began its season with a split against Sacred Heart winning its opener 2-1 as Clint Carlisle set up the first goal. In the second game Army dropped a 5-1 decision to Sacred Heart. Co-Captain Joe Kozlak and forward Carlisle were the lone Bulls Alumni to play in those games.
Forward Cody Freeman posted an assist as Canisius College doubled Western Michigan 4-2. The next game Canisius College would lose to Western Michigan 4-1.
Hampus Gustafsson notched one goal and added an assist as Merrimack beat Holy Cross twice 4-2, and 2-1. Karl Beckman played both games for Holy Cross, while Paul Berrafato and Colin Delia were not in goal for either games. The two are among three goalies on each of their respective squads. John Gustafsson appeared in one game for Merrimack.
Forward Greg Gibson scored for Robert Morris in a 3-1 win over Lake Superior State (Matt Johnson). Robert Morris took game two 3-0. John Rey suited up for both Robert Morris games, while Brady Ferguson played in one. Forward Tim Moore didn't dress for either contest.
Roman Ammirato collected an assist in his first college game to help Union defeat American International 7-3. The next night Union dumped the University of New Hampshire 3-1.
It's a busy weekend ahead for Bulls' Alumni with plenty of action. Army (Joe Kozlak, Clint Carlisle, Luke Jenkins, Kyle Plageman, Garrett Peterson and Brendan McGuire) face Canisius (Cody Freeman and Geoff Fortman); while Robert Morris (Jon Rey, Greg Gibson, Brady Ferguson and Tim Moore) take on Niagara (TJ Sarcona). Matt Johnson and Lake Superior State visit South Bend Indian and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Roman Ammirato and Union face Maine, while Matt Sieckhaus and Tyler Deresky lead Bentley against Sacred Heart. Merrimack College (John Gustafsson, Hampus Gustafsson, Colin Delia) meet UConn, while Holy Cross (Karl Beckman and Paul Berrafato) face American International (Brandon Lubin).
The Amarillo Bulls continue a seven game home stand this Friday and Saturday when they host the Lone Star Brahmas at 7 pm at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. It's Bulls Conquering Cancer Weekend.
The American Cancer Society will have a booth during both games and fans are encouraged to give generously when the bucket is passed around. The first 500 fans through the doors on Friday will get Blue Bulls' T-shirts, while the first 500 fans on Saturday get Pink T-shirts. Tickets are available at the Bulls Office located at 301 South Polk, Civic Center Box Office and all Panhandle Ticket Outlets.
