Alvarez, Neitz receive League weekly awards

DURHAM, NC-- OF Jorge Alvarez of the El Paso Diablos and RHP Josh Neitz of the Shreveport Sports were selected by Sportsticker, the American Association's official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 26-July 2.

For the week, Alvarez had a batting average of .524 (11-for-21) with 8 RBI, 6 runs, 2 doubles, and a slugging percentage of .619. This past Friday in a 14-6 victory over the Fort Worth Cats, Alvarez went a phenomenal 5-for-5 with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI. On the season, Alvarez is hitting .357 with 4 HR and 41 RBIs. He currently leads the league with 41 RBIs, 71 hits, 43 runs scored, and second with 16 doubles.

Alvarez was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers in June of 1987. Jorge spent six seasons in the Dodgers organization playing with the Dodgers (GCL), Salem, Vero Beach, and San Antonio. Last season for the San Angelo Colts, he hit .342 with 14 HR, 86 RBI, 34 doubles, and 122 hits.

In two appearances this week, Neitz went 2-0 allowing no runs on 6 hits with 8 strikeouts in 14 innings pitched. This past Sunday in a 4-0 victory over the Coastal Bend Aviators, Neitz clinched the 1st half South Division title for the Sports by pitching a complete game allowing only two hits and striking out five batters.

Neitz was selected by the New York Yankees in the 25th round of the 2002 draft. The Tampa, FL native spent two seasons in the Yankees farm system playing for Staten Island of the NY-Penn League and Battle Creek of the Midwest League. Last season, Neitz split his time with the Fort Worth Cats and Shreveport Sports
