GREENVILLE, S.C. (January 8, 2003) - Mobile Revelers guard Rafer Alston has signed a 10-day contract with the Toronto Raptors, the NBA team announced today, making him the fifth National Basketball Development League player to be "called-up" this season.
Alston is the second player from the Mobile Revelers to sign an NBA contract in the last two weeks. Forward Bobby Simmons signed with the Washington Wizards on Dec. 27. Alston is the 14th NBDL player to sign a NBA contract since the league began play in mid-November 2001 and the third in the last 16 days.
Additional 2002-03 NBDL-to-NBA call ups include Huntsville guard Mike Wilks to the Atlanta Hawks, Roanoke center Mikki Moore to the Boston Celtics and Fayetteville guard Devin Brown to the San Antonio Spurs.
The Raptors also announced that they have waived center Greg Foster and guard Jermaine Jackson, and have also signed forward Art Long to a 10-day contract.
Alston, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, averaged 15.8 points, 9.7 assists and 36.2 minutes in six games with the Revelers. A second-round draft choice (39th overall) by Milwaukee in 1998, Alston averaged 2.8 points, 2.5 assists and 11.0 minutes in 114 career games with the Bucks. He averaged career highs of 3.5 points, 2.9 assists and 12.0 minutes in a career-best 50 games with Milwaukee last season.
Alston is expected to join the Raptors for today's practice. The Raptors return to action Friday at Air Canada Centre versus the New Jersey Nets.
