Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. Charleston Battery midfielder Osvaldo Alonso has been named to the USL First Division All-League First Team as voted by the league's coaches and general managers. Alonso had a stand-out rookie season with the Battery scoring six goals and adding two assists in 29 games played.
Alsonso cemented his role in the Battery's starting line-up after impressive performances during the pre-season Carolina Challenge Cup. In addition to his six goals he also converted penalties in the U.S. Open Cup penalty shoot-out wins versus the Houston Dynamo (Third Round) and the Seattle Sounders (Semifinal).
Alonso defected from the Cuban national team last July during the 2007 Gold Cup; a native of San Cristóbal, Cuba, Alonso is the former captain of the Cuban Olympic team; he was capped 17 times for the full national team and scored 2 goals.
The Charleston Battery lost in the first round of the USL1 playoffs last weekend falling by an aggregate score of 2-1 to the Rochester Rhinos; Alonso scored the lone Battery goal.
The finalists for Defender of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards, as voted on by club general managers and coaches, will be unveiled Thursday, October 2. The winners of the marquee awards will be announced at the USL First Division Championship banquet.
