Elmira Pioneers News Release

Knuckleballer Joe Gannon stymied the Pioneer batters and closer Mike Meyer held off a couple of late Elmira scoring chances giving the Ambassadors a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Dunn Field.

Greg Keagle (3-3) fired a complete game 2-hitter in taking the hard-luck loss as both Ambassador hits led to runs.

Jorge Diaz doubled in the 4th and was the first Am to reach base. He advanced on a balk and scored on a Sac-fly by Ryan Bordenick. Later, with the score tied 1-1, Bordenick launched his team leading 3rd HR of the year in the 7th inning on an 0-1 pitch to decide the contest.

The Pioneers lone run was unearned in the 6th when Rod Smith reached on an eror and was replaced by Ron Bush on a fielder's choice. After a wild pitch, Norm Hutchins singled up the middle bringing in the lone Elmira run of the night.

The Pioneers came dangerously close to tying the score in the 8th and 9th innings. Bobby Hill legged out an infield single with 1 out in the 8th and Rod Smith walked. With two runners on base, Gannon made way for closer Mike Meyer. With the runners advancing to 2nd and 3rd on a double-steal, Meyer came through with back to back swinging strikeouts of Ron Bush and Norm Hutchins.

Elmira threatened again in the 9th with a 2-out walk of Osmani Gacia who was pushed to 3rd on Brian Jones single to right. Bu Sandy Vasquez popped out to left to end the game.
