July 25, 2014 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Torrington Titans News Release
Yesterday was the big day! Yesterday the roster of the All-Star game was announced by the FCBL. As announced the members of our Torrington Titans that will be on the All-Star team includes: Mike Odenwaelder, Matthew Batten, Jack St. Clair, Langston Calhoun, Kevin Connolly and George Lund!
Mike Odenwaelder has had an exceptional season so far! We asked Coach Dan McNamara what he thought about Mike and this is what he had to say, "Mike Odenwaelder is a monster at the plate. He can absolutely mash the ball and is the perfect fit for the Home Run Derby and the All-Star game. He's leading the FCBL with 40 RBIs, well ahead of any other player in the league. It's been a privilege coaching Odenwaelder this season."
Matthew Batten may look like one of the smallest on the field, but he has been some of the biggest plays at Fuessenich Park. On July 3, Batten hit his first career homerun. Not only was it a home run, but it turned out the bases were loaded and Batten hit a grand slam in the first inning! Not only does the team, staff, FCBL, fans think that he belongs in the All-Star game, but Coach McNamara said some great things as well! "Matt Batten is the best defensive shortstop I've ever seen in all my years in baseball. He's confident out on the field and his hitting has improved significantly this summer. He has a .303 average and has the ability to hit to all fields."
Jack St. Clair! St. Clair was Player of the Month for June! So it only seems fitting that his stellar skills on the field have lead him to the All-Star game! McNamara believes that St. Clair has been a team leader all season, on and off the field. He's been a league leader in batting average, with a .362 AVG and a .485 OBP. McNamara says St. Clair has a bright future in baseball, based on his performance this season in the FCBL and at Holy Cross.
Langston Calhoun was a late signing for the Titans but has proved to be a great asset to the team! McNamara says that Calhoun has really helped the team out offensively this summer with a .322 AVG and a .394 OBP. Calhoun always puts the Titans in a position to score and is fast on his feet. He is a team player and is going to help bring the skills of the West division over the East division at the All-Star game.
Kevin Connolly is a freshman pitcher but has been a standout on the mound. He is seen as a young pitcher with a big upside. McNamara says that Connolly has done an excellent job limiting batters on base and striking guys out all season, with 30 SO (the most of any Titans pitcher). Connolly has had a strong season so far with the Titans and looks to get stronger at the All-Star game.
George Lund is a stellar pitcher on the mound, with a 2.25 ERA. McNamara claims that, "Although Lund doesn't throw 90+, he knows how to pitch intelligently and has succeeded in the FCBL this year because of that. Lund definitely deserves a spot on the All-Star team because he's dominated batters all season."
