Erie Otters News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - For the third-straight year, the Erie Otters would host an afternoon hockey game on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. With the Sarnia Sting in town for the final time during the 2023-24 season, Erie would look to finish up the home weekend with continued success against the West Division. With the start time being pushed back to 4:00 P.M. to allow for more favorable and safer travel conditions for the visitors, the two teams would be well-rested for the mid-day affair.
Erie would continue its streak of scoring first on home ice, as the Otter power play would start the day right. Off of chaos in front of the net, Alexis Daviault (3, PPG) would be given the puck in the mid slot and fire it home for a 1-0 Erie lead. After taking a 9-2 shot advantage, the momentum shift would start to favor the Sting, as Sarnia would strike from Kai Schwindt (7, PPG) with just over three minutes remaining in the period. After 20 minutes of play, it would be a 1-1 game with a 13-7 shot advantage for Erie.
The second period would begin Erie's momentum march toward separation, as Sam Alfano (13) would open scoring in period two from a Dylan Edwards feed - just 1:47 into the frame. Minutes later Kai Schwindt (8, PPG) would strike again on the man-advantage to once again knot things up. Erie would retake the lead just under a minute later, as Alexis Daviault (4, GWG) would net his second of the night before the period's five minute mark. Shortly after this, Daviault would be sent to the locker room with a match penalty. Erie would kill off the ensuing five-minute major, and close out the period holding their 3-2 lead with a 26-13 shot advantage.
The name of the game in period three would be defense for Erie, as they would allow just a staggering five shots for Sarnia in the frame. Erie would eat up clock between two separate kills and a power play opportunity, and eventually force an empty-net on the Sarnia side. Owain Johnston (3) would waste no time in taking advantage of the open net, scoring his second goal in as many games with :39 left. 16 seconds later, Martin Misiak (14) would put the cherry on top with Erie's fifth goal to snag a 5-2 victory on home ice, and continue to build separation over the chasing Western Conference teams.
It'll be 12 days before the Otters return home, as Erie heads to North Bay, Sudbury, and the Soo for the upcoming weekend's trio of games - looking for the season series sweeps against all three teams. Erie will close out road action for January on the 26th as they travel to Oshawa for the only time this season. The Otters will finally return home on Saturday, January 27th for the always highly-anticipated Star Wars Night game, taking on the London Knights.
