Alcantara Named Indians Player of the Month

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Outfielder Izzy Alcantara has been named the Indianapolis Indians Player of the Month for June and will receive a specially-designed commemorative watch from Windsor Jewelers prior to today's game.

Alcantara led the Indians in 10 categories in June. He topped the team with a .306 average, 20 runs , 34 hits, six home runs, 22 runs batted in, six stolen bases, a .550 slugging percentage and a .366 on-base percentage. He also paced the team in games (28) and at-bats (111).

After hitting just .254 through the first two months of the season, Alcantara batted .306 in June to raise his season mark to .272. The 29-year-old, righthanded slugger hit safely in 20 of 28 games including eight of the last nine. He capped the month by earning the International League's Batter of the Week honor for June 24-30 when he hit .423 with three homers and nine RBI.

Alcantara, who leads the team with 27 multi-hit games this season, had 10 multi-hit games in June. Four of those games featured a three-hit performance by the 6'2", 180-lb. Dominican.

Alcantara signed with the Indians last winter as a free agent. For the season he is hitting .278 with 21 home runs and 56 RBI. He ranks third in the International League in homers, and is just 14 RBI behind the leader. Alcantara has started 45 games in the outfield, 22 at designated hitter and 18 at first base.

The Tribe's clean-up hitter led the IL with 36 home runs last year with Pawtucket. He finished second with 90 RBI and was seventh with a .297 average. Alcantara saw major league action with Boston in 2000 and 2001 combining to hit .277 with four home runs in 35 games.

The Indians will select a player of the month each month from April-August. The winning player receives a special watch from Windsor Jewelers. Outfielder Ryan Thompson won the award in April while pitcher Jimmy Osting was honored in May. At the end of the season, Windsor Jewelers will present the Indians Most Valuable Player with a championship-style diamond ring.
