Charlotte Knights News Release

FORT MILL, S.C. - The Charlotte Knights (28-58) dropped a 4th of July contest at Knights Stadium to the Durham Bulls (54-35) by a 4-3 score in 12 innings.

The game, which was played in front of 13,910 fans, the sixth largest total in Knights Stadium history, moved along at a brisk pace until it went into innings.

Each team received solid efforts from its respective pitching staff. For the Knights, LHP WADE PARRISH started and pitching seven innings and yielded three runs (two earned) on seven hits. RHP BROOKS KIESCHNICK took over for the southpaw and extended his personal scoreless streak to 12 innings. Kieschnick, who was predominantly a DH until recently, has yet to allow a run this year in nine appearances on the hill. RHP EDWIN ALMONTE followed with two shutout innings of his own, but LHP KEN VINING (2-4) allowed the Bulls to break the deadlock with a run in the 12th.

Offensively, the Knights struggled to put runs on the board all evening. After scoring a single tally in the first, the Knights did not break through again until RF ANTHONY SANDERS' homer in the seventh brought them back within one run. Sanders played the hero in the bottom of the ninth when his one-out single ninth scored CF JOE BORCHARD with the tying run. After LF DAMON BUFORD stole third with just one out, the Knights could not push the winning run across, as 1B JOSH PAUL and DH CHRIS SAUNDERS struck out to end the threat.

For the Knights, Borchard and 2B WILLIE HARRIS stroked three hits each, and Sanders and Paul also had two hits apiece on the evening.

The two teams will conclude their short two-game series on Friday at Knights Stadium at 7:15 p.m. with another fireworks show to follow the final home game of the season's first half. LHP JIM PARQUE (4-7, 7.62 ERA) will take the mound for Charlotte against Durham RHP Lance Carter (4-1, 3.65 ERA).
