Albuquerque acquires Melzer

GREENVILLE, S.C., March 2 - The Albuquerque Thunderbirds have acquired forward Rich Melzer from the NBA Development League available player pool. Melzer fills the roster spot vacated when Ken Johnson left the team.

Melzer, 6-8, 255, has played internationally for the New Zealand Breakers and in the Dominican Republic for San Carlos. He was a member of the Orlando Magic summer league squad at the 2005 Reebok Vegas Summer League and the Minnesota Timberwolves squad at the 2005 Minnesota Summer League. Melzer was in vet camp with the Washington Wizards in 2004.

The NBAC Division III player of the year as a senior at Wisconsin-River Falls, Melzer averaged 26.9 points and 8.5 rebounds on the way to being an All-America selection. In 103 collegiate games he averaged 22.9 points and 8.0 rebounds while converting .539 from the field (935-1736).

Melzer is expected to be in uniform when the Thunderbirds are host to Arkansas tonight at Tingley Coliseum. He will wear jersey no. 32.
