Alberts, Villarreal Named June Players Of The Month

DURHAM, NC - The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball announced today that Amarillo Sox OF Tim Alberts and Winnipeg Goldeyes LHP Luis Villarreal have been named the Rawlings Batter and Pitcher of the Month for June. The selection was made by Pointstreak, the official statistician of the American Association.

Alberts batted .411 with four home runs and 32 RBIs in 27 games. He also scored 18 runs, collected 44 hits (including 13 doubles) and stole one base. The Baldwinsville, NY resident had a June on-base percentage of .471 and a .664 slugging percentage. On the season, Alberts is hitting .390 with five home runs and 40 RBIs. The batting average is fourth best in the American Association while the RBIs are good for ninth in the league.

The 25-year-old was a Player of the Week recipient just last week. Alberts played at Niagara University and has been in the independent leagues his entire professional career.

Villarreal had a perfect 5-0 record with a 1.82 ERA in six starts. In 29 2/3 innings pitched, the southpaw fanned 18 batters while allowing six earned runs, 26 hits and seven walks. He also had an opponents batting average of only .228. The 31-year-old was a Player of the Week award winner for the week ending June 12.

The resident of San Antonio, TX was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 20th round of the 2002 MLB amateur draft. He spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons with the Red Sox before joining the independent leagues in 2004. Villarreal also played in the Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners organization as well as in Mexico and last season in China.
