Ray Giroux capped a furious Albany attack at 2:54 of overtime, giving the River Rats a 4-3 win over Norfolk on Monday afternoon. Albany outshot the Admirals by an 11-0 margin in overtime, and Giroux and Craig Darby finished with a goal and three assists each. Joe Hulbig scored twice for the Rats, who were 2-12-12 in OT games a year ago.

Defenseman Ross Lupaschuk scored once on a 5-on-3 power play and once while two men shorthanded as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton downed St. John's on Monday, 3-2. For the Penguins, who entered the year 0-3-3 in six home games against the Maple Leafs, it was their second win in five days on home ice against St. John's. Kris Beech added a goal for the Penguins, his team-leading fourth point of the season.

Steve Kariya's goal with 31.6 seconds left in the second period stood up as the game-winner as Manitoba posted a 3-2 victory in Lowell on Monday. It was Kariya's third goal and sixth point of the young season, and allowed the Moose to become the first 3-0-0 team in the AHL. Jeff Farkas and Zenith Komarniski also scored for Manitoba, and Alex Auld stopped 30 shots in net. Rookie Ryan Bayda scored his first goal of the year for Lowell.

Jason Ward scored twice and Jarret Stoll hit an empty net for his first professional goal as Hamilton opened its 2002-03 schedule on Monday with a 3-1 win in Rochester. The Bulldogs killed off all 13 Amerks power play chances, and scored two shorthanded goals to boot. Ty Conklin turned aside 36 shots for Hamilton; Ryan Miller made 22 saves but fell to 0-2-1 despite a 1.59 GAA and ..923 save percentage.

LOOKING AHEAD:

St. John's visits Bridgeport tonight (7:05 ET, 8:35 NT) in a rematch of a conference semifinal series from last spring's Calder Cup Playoffs. The Sound Tigers won that match-up in a four-game sweep en route to the Eastern Conference championship, with Rick DiPietro posting a 1.47 GAA and .940 save percentage in the series. The Bridgeport-Long Island shuttle has already begun, with Justin Mapletoft and Raffi Torres recalled by New York on Monday and Trent Hunter and Tomi Pettinen assigned to the Tigers. Newcomers Josh Holden and Brad Leeb share the Leafs' scoring lead with 3+3=6 pts. apiece, and former first-rounder Brad Boyes has two goals in his first three pro games. It's the last stop on a four-game, season-opening road trip for St. John's, and the second of three straight at home for Bridgeport.
