Aguila, Groff Tally Three Hits Apiece in Loss

The South Bend Silver Hawks (66-73, 31-38) squandered a 3-2 eighth inning lead and were edged 4-3 Sunday by the Great Lakes Loons in front of 4,771 fans at Dow Diamond. The Silver Hawks have lost nine of their last ten games and play just one more regular season game.

Joe Winker hit a solo home run for the Loons in the eighth inning to tie the game 3-3. An inning later, James Baldwin hit a walk-off RBI single with the bases loaded to push the Loons to victory. Baldwin's father played 11 big league seasons and was a member of the 1992 South Bend Whitesox.

Daniel Carela (2-1) earned the win for the Loons, hurling one scoreless inning. Jake Barrett (0-3) was saddled with the loss, surrendering the game-winning hit in the ninth inning.

Roidany Aguila and Eric Groff each tallied three hits for the Silver Hawks who pounded out 12 hits in a losing-effort. Chris Ellison finished 2-for-5.

Trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning, Ryan Court laced an RBI single to put the Silver Hawks on the board for the first time in the series. Next inning, Brian Billigen grounded into a double play to tie the game. In the eighth inning Billigen laced a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning to put the Silver Hawks in the lead.

Andrew Barbosa started for South Bend and allowed two earned runs on three hits over five innings. Raydel Sanchez started for the Loons and allowed two earned runs on eight hits over five innings.

The Silver Hawks and Loons play the final game of the regular season Monday at Dow Diamond. Right-hander Conrad Flynn (0-1, 6.41) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by right-hander Jackson Mateo (first appearance).
