
AFL Names Players of the Week

NEW YORK â Arizona Rattlers quarterback SHERDRICK BONNER, Orlando Predators defensive specialist KENNY MCENTYRE and Los Angeles Avengers wide receiver/linebacker GREG HOPKINS have been named Offensive Players, ADT Defensive Player and Ironman of the Week, respectively, for Week 11 of the 2003 season.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bonner (6-4, 240, Cal State-Northridge), who is in his 10th season, connected on 37-of-54 passes for 470 yards, nine touchdowns and one interception in the Rattlers' 82-76 overtime victory over the Western Division-leading Los Angeles Avengers (8-3) on Sunday. The former All-Arena performer led the Rattlers (6-5) by connecting on three fourth-quarter touchdown passes. Bonner set a franchise mark for passing yards, tied the team record for passing touchdowns â including his 500th career â while leading the Rattlers to their highest point total in their 11-year history. He ranks amongst the League's all-time leaders in attempts (3,261), completions (2,014), passing yards (25,484) and passing touchdowns (501). This marks the 11th time Bonner has earned an AFL weekly honor.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
McEntyre (5-11, 180, Kansas State), who is in his fifth AFL season, led Orlando (7-4) on the defensive side of the ball in the Predators' 66-23 victory over the Buffalo Destroyers (4-7) on Friday. The former Wildcat recorded 4.5 tackles â including a tackle for a loss â and three interceptions. McEntyre, who is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter for his ninth career (Tied-1st, GREG HOPKINS). He leads the Predators in interceptions (6), total tackles (70.5) and pass breakups (12). This marks the first time McEntyre has earned an AFL weekly honor.
IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Hopkins (6-2, 205, Slippery Rock), who is in his eighth AFL season, led Los Angeles (8-3) with his two-way performance by hauling in nine receptions for 162 yards and five touchdowns in the Avengers' 82-76 overtime loss to Arizona (6-5) on Sunday. On his way to garnering Ironman of the Game honors, the defending Ironman of the Year added 3.5 total tackles and a nine-yard interception return for a touchdown â the ninth of his career (Tied-No. 1, McEntyre) â giving him six touchdowns for the game and matching a team record. This marks the sixth time Hopkins has earned an AFL weekly honor.
Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Chicago's Billy Dicken, Detroit's Andy Kelly, Grand Rapids' Clint Dolezel, Indiana's Raymond Philyaw, Los Angeles' Tony Graziani, New York's Aaron Garcia, Tampa Bay's John Kaleo.
ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Carolina's Nick Ward, Chicago's Marvin Taylor, GrandRapids' Travis McDonald, Los Angeles' Cornelius Coe, New York's Chin Achebe, Orlando's Rashad Floyd, Tampa Bay's Omarr Smith.
Ironman of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Hunkie Cooper, Chicago's Lindsay Fleshman, Georgia's Darryl Hammond, Grand Rapids' Damon Hodge, Indiana's Eddie Brown, Orlando's Cory Fleming, San Jose's Barry Wagner and Tampa Bay's Andre Bowden.
