
AFL names monthly award winners

NEW YORK - Kansas City QB RAYMOND PHILYAW, Orlando Predators OL/DL GREG WHITE, Chicago Rush WR/DB DEJUAN ALFONZO, Tampa Bay Storm QB BRETT DIETZ, and Tampa Bay Storm K SETH MARLER have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, Ironman, Rookie, and Kicker of the Month, respectively, for the month of May.
OFFENSIVE: Philyaw (5-10, 180, NE Louisiana) completed 102-of-144 passes for 1,236 yards and 27 touchdowns over four games during the month of May to lead the Brigade (7-5) to a 3-1 record. Philyaw compiled the highest passer rating (136.5) of all quarterbacks during May as well as leading the League in fourth-quarter passing (71.9 completion pct., 141.5 passer rating). His best performance came in a 53-41 victory over the Philadelphia Soul that saw Philyaw complete 36-of-41 passes for 364 yards and six touchdowns. The Brigade will face the Grand Rapids Rampage (4-8) on Saturday, June 2, at 7 p.m. ET.
ADT DEFENSIVE: White (6-3, 285, Minnesota) registered 9.5 tackles, four quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed while leading the AFL during the month of May in sacks and tackles for loss with 6.5 as the Orlando Predators (7-5) posted a 2-2 overall record. White, who leads the League in sacks (13.0) and tackles for loss (14.0) notched 2.5 to set the single-season record for tackles for loss in a season against the Utah Blaze on Friday. His best performance came in a 42-33 victory over the New Orleans VooDoo on May 11, as he recorded 3.5 tackles, three sacks, three tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and forced one fumble. Orlando travels to HP Pavilion in San Jose to face the Mitsubishi Motors Western Division leading SaberCats (9-3) on Friday, June 1, at 10:30 p.m. ET (SUN Sports - Live, FSN Bay Area - SDD, 6/2 at 3 a.m. ET).
IRONMAN: Alfonzo (6-0, 205, Indiana St.) posted 19 receptions for 194 yards and six touchdowns as a receiver, notched six rushes for seven yards and three touchdowns on the ground and contributed 21.0 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one pass defensed on defense to lead the Rush to a 2-2 record during the month of May. Alfonzo's best performance of the month came during a 53-47 victory over the Arizona Ratters on May 26 that saw Alfonzo combine for four touchdowns (three receiving, one rushing) and 60 yards on offense with 2.5 tackles, and one pass defensed on defense. The Rush (9-3) travel to the Staples Center to square off against the Los Angeles Avengers (6-6) on Saturday, June 2, at 10:30 p.m. ET (SIRIUS Radio - Channel 119).
ROOKIE: Dietz (6-1, 195, Tulane) completed 100-of-143 passes for 1,093 yards with 21 touchdowns and six interceptions during his first full month as a starting quarterback in the AFL. Dietz led all rookies in passing yards and touchdowns during the month while guiding the Storm to a season-best 3-1 monthly record. His most consistent performance of the month came in a 66-45 victory over the Austin Wranglers as he completed 26-of-32 passes for 287 yards and five touchdowns. The Storm (5-7) next travel to New Orleans to play the VooDoo (7-1) on Saturday, June 2, at 8 p.m. ET (CST New Orleans - SDD, 6/3, at 12 a.m. ET
KICKER: Marler (5-8, 192, North Texas) connected on 26-of-27 PATs and converted a League-best 5-of-6 field goal attempts for 41 total points during the month of May that saw his Tampa Bay Storm (5-7) post a 3-1 record. Marler, in his rookie season, had his best performance in a 66-45 victory over the Austin Wranglers on May 6 as he converted 9-of-9 PATs and a 25-yard field goal.

ADT Defensive Player of the Month candidates included: Colorado DB Rashad Floyd, Columbus DB Brandon Hefflin, Los Angeles DB Eddie Canonico and OL/DL Jason Stewart, Tampa Bay DB Jeroid Johnson, Philadelphia OL/DL Dwayne Missouri, Austin DB Damon Mason, New York DB Billy Parker, San Jose WR/DB Marquis Floyd, and DB Clevan Thomas.
Ironman of the Month candidates included: Columbus WR/DB BJ Barre and WR/DB Harold Wells, Philadelphia WR/DB Mike Brown, WR/DB J.J. McKelvey and WR/DB Jerrian James, Arizona WR/DB William Fields, Nashville DB Ahmad Hawkins, Orlando FB/LB Marlon Moye-Moore, Tampa Bay WR/DB Lawrence Samuels, Austin WR/DB Sakeen Wright and Sedrick Robinson.
Rookie of the Month candidates included: New Orleans QB Steve Bellisari, Austin QB Lang Campbell and WR Otis Amey, Nashville QB Jeff Smoker and WR Kenny Higgins, Orlando WR/DB Ron Johnson, Las Vegas WR Travis LaTendresse, Chicago WR/DB Rob Mager, and San Jose DB Trestin George.
Kicker of the Month candidates included: Austin's Mark Lewis, Philadelphia's Todd France, Utah's Steve Videtich, Colorado's Jason Ball, and Grand Rapids' Brian Gowins.
