Aerodynamics...

Lucky Sevens...The Aeros broke open a tight ballgame with a seven-run explosion in the bottom of the sixth inning last night, sending 11 men to the plate and wearing out three different Bowie pitchers in the process en route to a 12-5 win at Canal Park. SS Josh Rodriguez opened the inning with a very literal bang, cracking a solo home run to straightaway center field to tie the game at 3-3. Rodriguez and other originally thought the ball was a double since the new padding in the outfield is missing the yellow home run line, but credit the umpires for being in good position to make the correct call. DH Matt Whitney then reached on an error, and 1B Michael Aubrey and 3B Wes Hodges sent consecutive RBI doubles to almost the exact same spot inside the first base bag to give the Aeros their first lead in the series. The Baysox then kicked the ball around and committed errors in the next three at-bats to account for two more runs before CF Jose Constanza and 2B Brandon Chaves delivered an RBI triple and sacrifice fly, respectively, to cap the inning. All told Bowie committed four errors in the inning and six on the night overall, and just four of the 12 runs allowed by the Baysox pitching staff were earned.

Back on Track...Jose Constanza had a big game for Akron last night, finishing 2-4 with a double, triple, three RBI and a run scored. The speedy centerfielder from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, had entered the game in a brutal 1-29 slump, so even with his big game he's still under the .100 mark in batting average at .091 entering play today. Brandon Chaves and Josh Rodriguez are also still battling slow starts with averages of .095 and .133, respectively. Perhaps a swap of defensive roles will spur the duo today, as Chaves will makes his first start of the season at shortstop and Rodriguez will move to the other side of the bag and play second base for the first time this year.

Eight Isn't Enough...1B Michael Aubrey extended his hitting streak to eight games to open the season last night, finishing 1-5 with an RBI double. Aubrey is hitting .286 this year and is tied for the team lead with two home runs and seven runs batted in. Most importantly, he's been healthy enough to appear in all eight games this season, including five starts at first base.

Did You Know...So much for being in fifth place. Yesterday's win pushed the Aeros into a tie for third in the Eastern League's Southern Division with Altoona after Thursday's loss had dropped Akron into a tie for fifth. It had been the first time Akron had seen fifth place since September 6th, 2004.
