Minnesota United FC News Release
BLAINE, Minn. (March 30, 2011) - You won't see Nike or Adidas on the jerseys of the NSC Minnesota Stars when they take the field on April 9. The team will be wearing Admiral, the same company that provided gear in the '70s and '80s for Minnesota's first professional soccer club, the Kicks, in the original North American Soccer League.
"What's old is new again," says Paul Hamburger, CEO of Admiral. "We are breathing new life into this brand that used to be on the jerseys of the giants of the game."
Admiral, the first brand in the United Kingdom to grace the jerseys of sports teams, is making a comeback and looking to dominate the soccer gear market once again. Admiral supplied the playing kit for major soccer teams in the 1970s and 1980s, including England, Manchester United, Los Angeles Aztecs, New York Cosmos, Tampa Bay Rowdies and Vancouver Whitecaps.
"Admiral is back and bigger than ever," says Hamburger. "Who wants to wear a brand that is everywhere' We are the brand that represents soccer and its 24 million players in the U.S."
Stars CEO Djorn R. Buchholz calls the team's partnership with Admiral a reunion of sorts.
"Admiral is an iconic British sports brand with nearly 100 years of heritage," says Buchholz. "We are proud to be associated with an original British soccer brand, especially one so strongly associated with Minnesota soccer and the NASL."
"The goal is to outfit all of the NASL in the original soccer jersey, and Minnesota is where it all begins," says Hamburger.
The Stars will unveil the new home uniform to the public on Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at La Cantina #1 inside Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn. Their first game of the season is April 9 against the Atlanta Silverbacks in Atlanta, and their first home game is April 30 against the Carolina RailHawks.
Admiral is available online and at local retail stores.
