Aces Takes Game Two Over Sky Sox, 6-3

The Reno Aces took advantage of five walks to take game two over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox by the score of 6-3 on Sunday afternoon at Security Service Field in front of 4,463 fans.

Sky Sox starter Jhoulys Chacin (1-1) had a rough outing for Colorado Springs as he gave up five runs on three hits and five walks to take the loss in his second start since being sent down from Colorado. It was a stark contrast to his last start when he threw five no-hit innings as the Sky Sox tossed their second no-hitter of the season at Oklahoma City.

Eric Byrnes led off the game with a solo homer to left field off Chacin to put Reno up 1-0. Chris Young followed with a single, moved to second on an error by centerfielder Eric Young Jr. and then to third on a balk by Chacin. Ruben Gotay then plated Young with an RBI groundout to give the Aces an early 2-0 lead. The Sox answered in the bottom of the first with a run after Young Jr. led off with a single, stole second and later scored on an RBI grounder by Matt Miller.

The third inning would prove to be the turning point in the game for both Chacin and Reno. Chacin had worked around two walks in the second to escape damage but couldn't pull it off in the third. He walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases before being replaced by Ryan Speier. Speier was able to get a pop out for the first out of the inning but then gave up a two-run single to Agustin Murillo and a run scoring single to Abraham Nunez to give Reno a 5-2 lead.

The most exciting play of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Young Jr. came to bat with two outs and the bases empty. Young Jr. ripped an offering from Seth Etherton (10-7) down into the right field corner and was off to the races. By the time right fielder Cole Gillespie tracked the ball down in the corner, Young Jr. was already starting to make the turn at third. Gillespie got the ball in quickly but Young Jr. beat the thrown home with a head first slide into the plate for an electric inside-the-park home run that made the score 5-3 Aces.

Etherton picked up the win for Reno after throwing five innings in relief of starter Daniel Cabrera who only made it through the fourth before being lifted because of a pitch count. Newly acquired righty Russ Ortiz made his debut for the Sky Sox and tossed four solid relief innings giving up just one run on three hits while walking two and striking out three.

Game three tomorrow night starts at 6:05 PM (MDT) with RH Brandon Hynick (10-7, 3.59) taking the hill for the Sox versus RH Hector Ambriz (6-9, 6.01).
