San Angelo Colts News Release

ALEXANDRIA, Louisiana - For the second time this season, the Alexandria Aces (28-8) have swept the San Angelo Colts (18-18) in a three-game series by winning all three games by one run. After the Aces accomplished the feat from July 7-9 in San Angelo, they did it again with a 3-2 victory on Thursday at Bringhurst Field.

After a pitcher's duel between Aces starter Adam Frey and Colts starter Luke Massetti, the Colts broke through in the top of the fifth to take a 1-0 edge. Andres Rodriguez crushed a 3-0 pitch by Frey to left field for his 12th homer of the season to put San Angelo on the board.

The Aces tied the scored in the bottom of the fifth, posting their first two hits of the night in the frame after Massetti faced the minimum through four. The right-hander was nearly out of the inning after he induced Evan Cherry to hit a slow grounder to shortstop with runners at first and second with two outs. However, Billie Hicks made an errant throw to first base-over the head of Rodriguez-allowing Palmer Karr to score from second on the play. Since Cherry was credited with a hit and the next batter walked, the run was earned.

Alexandria took a 2-1 lead, its first lead of the night, in the sixth inning, thanks to a solo homer by Selwyn Langaigne, his seventh of the year.

The Colts again used the long ball in the eighth, as Ronnie Gaines blasted his 15th homer of the season off reliever Juan Ovalles to even the score at 2-2.

Once again though, the Aces bounced right back and took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ryan Mulle gave up a two-out, RBI double off the center-field wall to Bryan Sabatella that scored Luis Guance and put Alexandria ahead 3-2.

Aces closer Justin Dowdy struck out the side in the ninth for his league-leading 21st save, and Ovalles wound up with the victory to improve to 5-2. Mulle took the loss, dropping his record to 5-3.

Massetti threw seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts and five walks. Frey lasted seven innings, giving up just one run on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

The Colts, who have just six home games left, return to Foster Field on Friday, August 10 to start a three-game series with the Edinburg Coyotes. First pitch on Friday, which is "Click It or Ticket" Night, is set for 7:05 p.m.
