Alexandria Aces News Release
Alexandria, LA - The Alexandria Aces thrilled a hometown crowd of 2,357 Saturday night with a 3-2 last at-bat victory over the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings. Josh Tranum drove in Keto Anderson with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and lefthander Adam Cox pitched two innings of shutout relief in his first appearance of the season.
With the game tied 2-2 in the eighth, Anderson led off with an infield single to deep shortstop. Richard Paz fouled off one bunt attempt before singling through the left side to send Anderson to second base. After a strikeout, Anderson stole third base and then scored easily on a single through the right side by Tranum. Anderson doubled and scored in the sixth inning and went 2-for-3, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Tranum drove in two of Alexandria's three runs, giving him 20 RBI on the year. He has reached base in every game.
The story for the first six-and-a-half innings was the pitching of righthanders Peter Henyan for Rio Grande Valley and Santo Hernandez for Alexandria. Henyan allowed just two hits and one earned run in six innings, while Hernandez struck out eight batters in seven innings.
Both teams scored in the first inning, with Scott Jay doubling in Omar Bramasco for the WhiteWings and Tranum scoring Paz with a fielder's choice for Alexandria. The Aces took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when a Trey Beamon groundout scored Anderson, but Rio Grande tied it in the seventh against a tiring Hernandez on a bases-loaded single by Antoin Gray. Hernandez recovered to get Jay on a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
Cox, re-signed by the Aces on Saturday, entered in the eighth inning and retired six of the seven batters he faced to earn his first win. The series concludes Sunday at 5:05 p.m., with WhiteWing righty Jordy Templet facing Aces righthander Fontella Jones. For more information, call 473-ACES or log on to www.myacesbaseball.com.
