Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska shook off the disappointment of squandering a 2-0 third period lead and kept its winning streak intact with a 3-2 victory over Fresno in a shootout before 5,260 Saturday at Sullivan Arena.
As they had the night before, the Aces jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, as Barrett Heisten and Peter Metcalf scored in a span of 2:20 midway through the frame. Heisten's goal came as he was falling down in the slot area at 9:10, and Metcalf followed with a blast from between the circles for his eighth goal of the year and second in as many nights. Both goals were assisted by Ryan Gaucher, who like Heisten, has a point in each of his last eight games.
Goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu kept the Falcons off the scoreboard through two periods, but a steal by J.F. Plourde in the Alaska zone led to Fresno's goal, a rebound of Plourde's shot that was flicked in by Pete Fregoe at 3:20 of the third period. The Falcons stayed on the attack, and finally got the equalizer when Plourde slipped a wrist shot past a screened Beckford-Tseu with 2:59 left in regulation. A scoreless overtime followed, but goals by Vladimir Novak and Heisten in the first two rounds put the Aces ahead to stay in the shootout, as only Cory Murphy was able to solve Beckford-Tseu, who stopped 34 shots in regulation and OT and four of five in the extra session to improve his personal mark to 9-0-1.
Alaska remains in first place in the West Division by four points over Las Vegas, a 3-2 winner at Toledo, with an ECHL-best record of 17-3-2, 12-1-1 at home. The Aces will take Sunday and Monday off, practice Tuesday and Wednesday, and then travel for a three-game series at Victoria that begins Friday, December 16, at 6:00 p.m. ADT.
All Alaska Aces games, home and away, are broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com. In addition, all home games and selected road contests will be available on a pay-per-view basis on the internet, courtesy of B2 Networks.
