Charlotte Checkers News Release
(Pensacola, Florida - Saturday, December 10, 2005) Charlotte's woes in Pensacola continued Saturday night as the Ice Pilots edged the Checkers 4-3 Saturday night in Florida. It was Charlotte's fourth straight loss to the Ice Pilots at the Pensacola Civic Center dating back to last season, and the fifth straight loss to the Ice Pilots overall.
Pensacola got goals from Corey Neilson, Bryson Busniuk, Adam Courchaine, and Dave Turon, while the Checkers Hugh Jessiman notched a pair of lamp lighters for Charlotte. Ryan Fultz had the other Charlotte goal. Checkers goalie Al Montoya, on a conditioning assignment from the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, suffered his first loss after starting the last two games.
The Checkers went 1-3-0 for the week, and are 5-9-0 in their last 14 games.
"Another one-goal loss is tough," lamented Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. "We still have a few guys that every couple games aren't on the same page as the other guys and it's hurting us. Our schedule lately has been very tough and despite the loss, I'm very happy with the guys' effort tonight. With what they've been through this week, they fought hard."
The Checkers grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the period when Fultz' blast off a perfect helper from Juris Stals got by Pensacola goalie Todd Ford. The Ice Pilots, with one goal in their last 41 tries on the power play, tied the game with the extra man on a Neilson strike at 10:42.
Pensacola took the lead at 14:45 of the period on Busniuk's second goal of the season before Charlotte would tie it up. Jessiman deflected a shot into the net with just 1:27 left in the period, and the two teams went to the locker room after one period tied at 2-2.
The Ice Pilots scored a pair of goals in the second period for a 4-2 advantage after two periods. After killing three straight penalties early in the third period, Charlotte finally got to within one of Pensacola when Jessiman scored his second of the night with three minutes to go in the game. Despite pulling Montoya for an extra attacker with a minute to go, the Checkers were unable to get the tying goal and Pensacola hung on for the 4-3 victory.
The loss saw the Checkers record fall to 10-9-1 for 21 points. Pensacola with the win raised its record to 9-11-3 for 21 points. Charlotte will return to action Wednesday, hosting the Columbia Inferno at Charlotte Bobcats Arena at 7:00 p.m.
