Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Alexandria, LA - The first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (0-3) took their first lead of the United League Championship Series in the fifth, but couldn't stop Palmer Karr Jr. from hitting two home runs and driving in four to give the second half and defending United League champion Alexandria Aces (3-0) a 9-4 victory in game three of the United League Championship Series tonight at Bringhurst Field. The Aces lead the best-of-seven series 3-0.

The Aces scored first for the third straight game as they made it 2-0 against Maximino de la Cruz (0-1) in the third. Evan Cherry drew a one-out walk. One out later, Tyrone Pendergrass walked and Richard Paz hit an RBI-single. Selwyn Langaigne walked to load the bases and Josh Tranum drew a walk to force in a run.

Omar Bramasco responded in the fourth by taking Adam Frey deep over the right-center field wall to make it 2-1. That broke a streak of ten-straight batters retired by Frey to start the game. It was also Bramasco's first hit of the series.

The floodgates opened in the fifth as Brian Nichols led off with a homer (his first hit of the series) to straight-away center field. One out later, Sam McLain singled and John Beal hit an RBI-double. After another out, Bramasco hit an RBI-single to make it 4-2. It was the WhiteWings first lead of the series.

Frey ended up lasting five and a third innings, allowing four runs on six hits with ten strikeouts.

Charlie Foster (1-0) retired both batters he faced to end the sixth, one via strikeout, to get the win.

With two outs in the sixth, Karr and Luis Guance hit back-to-back home runs, each no doubt shots deep over the left field wall. It was each hitter's second homer of the series. Bryan Sabatella followed with a double to knock out de la Cruz. Joey Cress came in but couldn't stop Evan Cherry from hitting a go-ahead RBI-single to make it 5-4.

De la Cruz ended up going five and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts.

The Aces blew it open in the seventh with one out as Paz, Langaigne and Tranum singled off Joey Cress to make it 6-4. Chris Gale came in for Karr and fell behind 3-0 before giving up a three-run blast to make it 9-4.

The series continues tomorrow when the WhiteWings and Aces play game four at Bringhurst Field at 7:05 p.m. Julian Williams (6-5, 3.73) will face Brian Bunyan (3-2, 5.59). The WhiteWings need to win to keep the series going.
