Alexandria Aces News Release
Alexandria Aces manager RC Lichtenstein continues to fine-tune his roster, signing two pitchers and releasing a third.
Left-hander Julio Ortiz, a former Bolton High standout, is the third southpaw on the Aces pitching staff. He spent last season in the minor league system of the Montreal Expos splitting time between Vermont (New York-Penn League) and Brevard County (Florida State League). Ortiz struck out 29 batters in 33-plus innings, limiting hitters to a .227 batting average. After graduating from Bolton, Ortiz attended the University of Mobile.
Jeremy Flanagan, a right-handed pitcher, is a former 13th-round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs. He threw 31 innings in relief last season for Boise (Northwest League) after sitting out the entire 2001 campaign.
Lichtenstein released right-handed pitcher Mark Pederson last week.
The Central Baseball League, preparing for its 10th season of independent baseball, will play a 96-game schedule between May and August 2003.
The 10-member league has teams located in Amarillo, Edinburg, Rio Grande Valley (Harlingen), San Angelo, Robstown and Ft. Worth, Texas; Alexandria and Shreveport, La.; Springfield/Ozark, Mo.; and Jackson, Miss.
