Abbott, Koons, Rohan Heading to Tucson
July 12, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release
The Golden Baseball League season pauses for three days as the GBL prepares to face the Northen League in an independent league All-Star contest on July 14. Two Orange County Flyers players - infielder Jimmy Rohan and pitcher Mike Koons - are on their way to this week's All-Star Game in Tucson, Arizona, at Hi Corbett Field on July 14 at 7:00pm.
Flyers manager Paul Abbott is serving as the Pitching Coach for the GBL All-Star team. Abbott pitched for 11 years in the Major Leagues, winning 17 games as a starter with the Seattle Mariners in 2001. Before being named Flyers manager this year, he served as the team's pitching coach in 2009.
Rohan, 26, is a former Triple-A prospect of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is currently fourth in the GBL with a .382 batting average and leads the Flyers with 35 RBI and 16 doubles to go along with two homeruns. The infielder made the All-Star team as a second baseman despite having played third base for half of the season. Rohan put together a 15-game hitting streak earlier in the season, and he has already broken the franchise record for four-hit games in a season with five in 2010.
Koons, 24, has provided consistent relief pitching for Orange County this season. The right-hander is 2-0 this season over 21 relief appearances, spanning 28.1 innings of work. During the first half, Koons put together a 16 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings pitched streak, breaking the old franchise record of 16 consecutive scoreless innings that stood since 2005. His 26 strikeouts on the season is tops among Flyers relievers.
The 23-man GBL All-Star roster includes the following players:
Catcher: Mike Rose (Chico), Josh Arhart (Victoria)
Firstbase: Cliff Brumbaugh (Edmonton)
Secondbase: Jimmy Rohan (Orange County)
Shortstop: Ryan Priddy (Tucson)
Thirdbase: Brian Rios (Victoria)
Utility: Gered Mochizuki (Maui), Tom Collaro (Edmonton), Jermy Acey (St. George)
Outfield: Lino Garcia (Tucson), JJ Sherrill (Chico), Timothy Rodriguez (Yuma), Drew Miller (Calgary)
Pitchers: Jason Mackintosh (Maui), Kris Honel (Chico), Wes Etheridge (Maui), Daryl Arreola (Yuma), Alexander Francisco (Edmonton), Josh Dew (Chico), Emiliano Fruto (Tucson), Justin Segal (Chico), Mike Koons (Orange County), Andrew Snowdon (Tucson)
Orange County continues the regular season on Thursday, with a four-game series against the St. George RoadRunners and four-game series against the Chico Outlaws. The Flyers will begin the second-half of the GBL season on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader against the RoadRunners, the team's 46th game of the season.
