VISALIA â A sellout crowd of 1,612 saw the Oaks offence silenced by Modesto pitching in a 3-1 loss to the Athletics at Recreation Park. Derell McCall pitched seven innings and allowed Visalia's only run of the game to improve to 3-3.
Dan Conway slugged his second home run of the season against McCall. The solo shot cut Modesto's lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gary Thomas touched Jeff Francis for a two-run homer with two out in the top of the fifth inning. The starter is now 1-5 on the season. It was Thomas' first home run of the season.
Former Oak Nick Swisher hit his fifth home run of the season in the seventh to make Modesto's lead 3-1.
The Oaks missed an opportunity to draw closer in the eighth inning. Visalia had runners at second and third with one out, but A's reliever Marcus Gwyn struck out Corey Slavik and Justin Lincoln consecutively to end the inning.
Fritz On Deck: Former Fresno State Bulldog Ben Fritz is scheduled to pitch Saturday for Modesto. Below are the expected pitching match ups for the rest of the series:

The Radisson Hotel Visalia Pre Game Show will begin at 6:52 p.m. on Saturday and at 1:22 p.m. on Sunday.
On Base: A large portion of the Oaks second largest crowd of the season was comprised of kids and many stayed until after the fireworks. 347 took the Oaks up on an offer to run the bases.
On Field: The Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Tiger Scouts are holding a campout on the outfield overnight at Recreation Park. Scouts who stay over will be able to participate in a clinic with Oaks player at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
The Crowd: Friday's sellout of 1,612 was the second largest crowd of the season. The Oaks drew 1,938 for the home opener on April 11.
