A September to Remember for Cornish

A series of spectacular performances has earned Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish a pair of Canadian Football League player-of-the-month awards for September.

Cornish is both the CFL's offensive player of the month and Canadian player of the month for the period that covers Weeks 11 through 14. The 29-year-old New Westminster, B.C., product played three games during that stretch and surpassed the 100-yard mark in rushing on each occasion including 174 yards against Toronto on Sept. 13 and 156 yards against BC on Sept. 27.

His totals for the three contests included 48 carries for 439 yards - an average of 9.1 yards per carry and 146 yards per game - and two rushing touchdowns as well as nine catches for 62 yards and one receiving score. Cornish also had a two-point convert reception to help the Stamps successfully complete a comeback from a 26-point deficit against the Argonauts on Sept. 13.

Although it didn't count in the voting period for the monthly award - the Sept. 1 game was considered to be part of the August period - Cornish's September is made all the more impressive when you factor in his 163-yard, one touchdown performance in a Labour Day Classic victory over the Edmonton Eskimos.

Cornish's 602 rushing yards in September allowed him to move from 19th place in the CFL rushing race to second. He's just 21 yards back of leader Brandon Whitaker of the Montreal Alouettes as Cornish bids for a third consecutive CFL rushing title.

This is the eighth time in Cornish's career he has been named the CFL's Canadian player of the month and the second time he has been the offensive player of the month.
