Published on October 1, 2014 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release
TORONTO - Jon Cornish, Bear Woods and Weston Dressler were named the CFL Players of the Month for September, the Canadian Football League announced today.
The monthly awards include all games played from Week 11 to Week 14.
The three players were chosen by a panel of judges that includes former Canadian Football League players Matt Dunigan and Duane Forde of TSN, and Pierre Vercheval of RDS.
CFL Offensive and Canadian Player of the Month
Jon Cornish
RB - Calgary Stampeders
Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish was named both the Offensive Player of the Month and the Canadian Player of the Month for September. With Cornish in the lineup this past month, the Stamps went a perfect 3-0.
The former Kansas Jayhawk averaged 9.15 yards on 48 carries and accumulated 62 yards on nine receptions while scoring a total of three touchdowns. His 439 rushing yards were tops in the month - 135 yards clear of second place.
Cornish's standout performance of the past four weeks came in Week 12. He registered a season-high 174 yards on 11 carries, including a career-long 79-yard touchdown run to power the Stampeders' offence. His second major of the contest - a 25-yard touchdown reception - capped an historic comeback as the Stamps erased a 29-10 halftime deficit to emerge with a 40-33 decision.
The dual nods for Player of the Month come with Cornish having taken three of the four Canadian Player of the Week awards in September. Cornish also took home both the Offensive and Canadian weekly honours in Week 12.
This is the first time this season Cornish has been named Canadian Player of the Month after receiving the honour three times during the 2013 campaign.
CFL Defensive Player of the Month
Bear Woods
LB - Montreal Alouettes
Montreal Alouettes linebacker Bear Woods was named the Defensive Player of the Month for September. Woods recorded 33 tackles, three sacks and forced a fumble in the Alouettes' four September contests.
The native of Macclenny, Florida had a career-game in Week 11, notching personal bests in both tackles (10) and sacks (2) in a game as the Alouettes prevailed at home with a 38-31 victory over their East Division rivals, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Woods' outstanding play in the month of September saw him recognized as Defensive Player of the Week in Weeks 11 and 14.
Currently, Woods is third on the Alouettes with 46 tackles and sits fourth on the team with four sacks.
The former Troy University Trojan is in his third season in the CFL and this is his first career Player of the Month award.
CFL Special Teams Player of the Month
Weston Dressler
KR/PR - Saskatchewan Roughriders
Saskatchewan Roughriders returner Weston Dressler was named the Special Teams Player of the Month for September. In the Riders' four games, Dressler returned two punt returns for touchdowns and averaged 14.7 yards per return.
In Week 11, Dressler's 75-yard punt return for a touchdown proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Riders took the Labour Day Classic rematch 30-24. In Week 13 against the Ottawa REDBLACKS, he topped the feat by returning a punt 78 yards for a major to establish a new career-high. His two punt return touchdowns on the year lead the league.
After his Week 13 performance of five punt returns for 103 yards, the Bismarck, North Dakota native was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
The former University of North Dakota Bison's productive month saw him register 17 punt returns for 250 yards - 70 yards higher than September's second-highest punt returner.
This is Dressler's first Player of the Month honour this season since returning to the CFL in Week 10.
