Peoria Rough Riders News Release
Billed as a clash of the titans the Peoria versus Lexington game pitted 2 teams that have made recent championship appearances against one another. The game started out looking good for the Rough Riders leading 13- 7 at the end of the first quarter and still holding the lead at halftime 19-13. Peoria ¬â¢s first half scores coming from 2 short TD runs by Kevin Galbreath and a 2-yard blast into the end zone by Tony Pryor. Though only ahead by 6 at the half the stats show Peoria almost doubling Lexington in nearly every offensive category.
After the half the tide turns on Peoria when Lexington QB Dusty Bonner threw 3 touchdowns passes in the second half. The team from Kentucky also took the Rough Riders high powered kick return tandem of Marcus James and Brandon Robinson out of the equation by choosing to kick off out of bounds rather than risk giving them a chance to make a big play. The combination of injuries, disputed calls by the officiating crew and solid play by Lexington ended Peoria ¬â¢s undefeated ride as Lexington won with a final score of Lex. 44 ¬" Peo. 33 leaving Peoria with a 2-1 record on the season as Lexington ended their skid and moved to 3-2 on the year.
Even in the lose there were some bright spots for the Rough Riders as QB Walter Church completed passes to 6 different receivers throwing for 232 yards. Tops on the wide receiver list was speedster Jon Schoonover putting in a nice performance of 6 catches for 80 yards, the longest being a 29 yard strike. There was also a bright spot for the fans in all this as 34 game balls found their way into the stand during the game becoming souvenirs and setting the highest mark ever for balls into the crowd in Peoria indoor football history.
Next up Peoria will travel to play the Sioux City Bandits in Iowa on April 23rd. The next home outing for the Riders will be against the Sioux Falls Storm on May 7th.
