St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (May 2, 2014) - The Lowertown business community will get a taste of what it will be like when the St. Paul Saints move to town in 2015. The annual World's Largest Game of Catch presented by Hiway Federal Credit Union, complete with a pig, a massaging nun, food and the entire 2014 Saints team, will take place just blocks from the new Lowertown Ballpark.
On Wednesday, May 14 the Saints block party goes from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Robert Street between 6th Street and 7th Place. The event serves as a kick-off to the 2014 season and fans are encouraged to bring their gloves. Everyone in attendance will receive a free soft baseball with the Saints, Hiway Federal Credit Union and Army logos.
Fans will have the chance to satisfy their taste buds with slices of pizza from Little Caesars (one slice for $1), gyros from Grecian Delight and delectable treats from Whole Foods Market, St. Paul. Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery will be sampling its famous fresh cheese curds and will have packages available for sale. Proceeds from all food sales will be donated to the charity of their choosing. Soda and water will be provided free of charge courtesy of the Saints and 7-UP.
A representative from the Mayor's office will be in attendance and kick-off the event. Jefferson Lines will transport the team to the event and the team will take center stage around noon as manager George Tsamis will introduce his club.
With the Saints moving into the Lowertown Ballpark in 2015, there will be a special "Lowertown Ballpark" table where fans can place historic items into a time capsule that will be placed in a wall cavity near the Community Events entrance.
Fans will have an opportunity to partake in a game of catch with their friends, colleagues and even Saints players and coaches.
After a month-long Name the Pig Contest presented by the Minnesota State Lottery and the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, the 2014 pig will be introduced and his name will be revealed. In past seasons, names have coincided with reality show stars (Kim Lardashian and Kris Hamphries in 2012), sports icons (Brat Favre in 2010), local flair (Garrison Squeallor in 2007), national flavor (Boarack Ohama in 2008), baseball lore (The Great Hambino in 1998) and music style (Mackleboar in 2013, Justin Bieboar in 2011, Hammy Davis Jr. in 2000, The Notorious P.I.G. - Piggy Smalls in 2003 and Squeal Diamond in 2004).
"We have hosted this event in downtown St. Paul for many years," said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Derek Sharrer. "The support we receive from the downtown business community and neighborhood residents is incredible. We look forward to the World's Largest Game of Catch every year because it means that yet another Saints season is about to begin."
The Saints, Hiway Federal Credit Union and St. Paul BOMA will be joined by participating sponsors Walser Automotive and St. Paul Athletic Club. Sister Rosalind Gefre will be giving massages to benefit her Christian Ministry.
