\'Pels enjoying largest CBL attendance increase
July 5, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release
With the 2005 Central Baseball League season now a little more than half complete, the Pelicans are enjoying success both on the field and in the stands. Pensacola is leading the league with the highest percentage increase in average attendance over last years ending attendance per game figures.
This year the Pelicans have increased their average attendance nearly 50 percent to total almost 1,600 fans per game compared to an average of 1,067 in 2004. Around the league, El Paso has increased their average attendance by 31 percent and Fort Worth has increased by seven percent, respectively. In total, 42,703 fans have attended a Pelicans game this season, nearly 18,000 more people at this same time last year. That number also surpasses the total number of fans in all of 2004 of 42,176.
The Pelicans have had at least 1,000 fans at 24 of their first 27 home games played this season, which is a dramatic increase from 2004 when there were 18 games with an attendance of 1,000 or more in 47 games.
On Sunday, July 3, 2,991 fans packed Pelican Park for the game against the Shreveport Sports. This was the largest crowd in 2005 and second largest crowd in Pelicans history, the first being a little more than 3,100 on August 14, 2004.
Pelican Park has a seating capacity of 1,972 (not including grass seating or standing room). This year, the Pelicans are ranked first in the percentage of seats filled at each game occupying 80 percent of the total seats available. Edinburg is second, filling 72 percent of its 4,000 seats every game and Fort Worth comes in third filling 65 percent of its 5,565 seats.
The Pelicans join Fort Worth as the two teams that were in the CBL in 2004 to raise their average attendance from last year. Pensacola has raised their average attendance by 509 fans with Fort Worth is seeing an increase of 248 fans per game.
The new edition El Paso Diablos to the CBL has also seen an increase in attendance since joining the league. In 2004 in the Double "A" Texas League, the Diablos averaged 3,423 fans per game and have upped that number this year by more than 1,000 to average 4,476 per game in the Central League.
The Central League is quickly becoming the biggest and best Independent League and Pensacola is leading the way.
