Walk this Way, Saints Give 12 Free Passes in 8-1 Loss to RedHawks

FARGO, ND (June 23, 2014) - The St. Paul Saints had trouble finding the strike zone on Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field as starter Robert Coe tied an American Association and franchise record by walking eight and the team finished one shy of a franchise record as they walked 12 Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Five of the 12 walks came around to score in an 8-1 loss.

Coe managed to pitch around three walks in the first two innings, but in the third he walked Zach Penprase and Ronnie Bourquin to start the inning. Sawyer Carroll tied the game at one with an RBI single to center. With two outs Petey Paramore lined a single back up the middle to give the RedHawks a 3-1 lead.

In the fifth Coe walked Bourquin for the third time and Carroll promptly drilled a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall, his third of the season, to give the RedHawks a 5-1 lead. Coe lasted 5.0 innings allowing five runs on four hits while walking eight and striking out five. The eight walks tied the American Association record set by several players and a Saints franchise record done by two others: Reed Dickert was the last to do it on June 15, 2009 at Sioux City while Steve Curry did it on August 20, 1995 @ Duluth-Superior.

Saints reliever Drew Gay didn't have much more luck with the strike zone in his first inning of relief. After retiring the first two hitters in the seventh Gay walked the next three hitters, including Bourquin who walked four times on the night. C.J. Retherford was the recipient of the free passes knocking in two with a single to make it 7-1. Gay worked 3.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking four and striking out one. The Saints finished one walk of tying a franchise record which they set earlier this year on May 18 vs. Gary SouthShore.

The Saints lone run came in the second when Henry Wrigley led off with an infield single to third. With one out Willie Cabrera was hit by a pitch. With two outs Joey Becker broke out of a 0-19 slump by singling to right and driving in Wrigley which gave the Saints a 1-0 lead.

Evan Bigley had his hitting streak snapped at 13, the longest of the season by a Saints player. It was the fourth time in his career he had a hitting streak snapped at 13.

The same two teams meet in game two of the four game series on Tuesday night at Newman Outdoor Field at 7:02 p.m. The Saints send RHP Nick Barnese (3-2, 3.49) to the mound against RedHawks LHP Jake Laber (5-1, 3.48). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
